Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most common kidney disorder in dogs and one of the most frequent diagnoses in older dogs. It is marked by a gradual, irreversible loss of kidney function. The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) classifies CKD into four stages based mainly on blood creatinine, which rises as the disease progresses.
CKD cannot be cured, but its progression can be slowed considerably with the right nutrition — diet is one of the few interventions repeatedly shown to extend both quality and length of life in affected dogs. The priorities are restricting phosphorus, moderating protein while keeping its quality very high, limiting sodium, and adding omega-3 fatty acids.
