Working out dog weight loss calories is simpler than it looks: estimate your dog’s resting energy requirement (RER) at his target weight, feed roughly 80% of it, and aim to lose about 1% of body weight per week under veterinary guidance. This guide shows you the exact formulas and a fully worked example so you can calculate a safe portion yourself.
Overweight dogs are common in Hong Kong, where small flats, hot humid weather and generous treating all conspire against a lean waistline. The good news is that dog weight loss calories come down to a short, repeatable calculation. Do it once, and you have a number you can feed to with confidence.
Why simply cutting the bowl backfires
The instinctive fix for an overweight dog is to scoop less of the usual food. It rarely works, and it can do harm. When you cut portions of an ordinary maintenance food, you cut calories and nutrients together.
- Nutrient dilution: feed 30% less kibble and your dog also gets 30% less protein, vitamins and minerals, which can tip a long diet into deficiency.
- Hunger and begging: a smaller bowl of the same calorie-dense food empties the stomach faster, so the dog feels hungrier and you feel guiltier.
- Muscle loss: too little protein during weight loss burns lean muscle alongside fat, exactly the tissue an older dog needs to keep.
The better approach to dog weight loss calories is to count them properly and, where appropriate, switch to a food designed to deliver fewer calories per gram. First, the math.
Step 1: Use the target weight, not today’s weight
Every calculation below is anchored to your dog’s ideal (target) body weight, not the number on the scale today. If you feed for the current, heavier body, you simply maintain the excess. A useful rule of thumb: each point above the ideal 4–5 on the 9-point body condition scale represents roughly 10–15% excess body weight. So a dog scoring 7/9 is carrying about 20–30% too much, and you can estimate the target by subtracting that from the current weight. It is only an estimate — your vet will refine it against breed, frame and muscle — but it gives you a number to start the math with.
Step 2: Calculate RER, the engine behind dog weight loss calories
RER is the calories a dog burns at rest in a day. It is the foundation of every feeding calculation. There are two accepted formulas:
- Exponential (all sizes): RER = 70 × (ideal body weight in kg)0.75
- Linear approximation (2–45 kg): RER = (30 × ideal body weight in kg) + 70
The linear version is easy to do on a phone and is close enough for most medium dogs; the exponential version is more accurate for very small (under 2 kg) or very large (over 45 kg) dogs. Either way, plug in the target weight.
Step 3: Apply the weight-loss factor
For a healthy adult at ideal weight you would multiply RER by an activity factor to get the maintenance energy requirement (MER). For weight loss you do the opposite: feed below maintenance. A widely used, well-tolerated starting point is:
- Daily calories for weight loss ≈ 0.8 × RER, calculated at the target weight.
This is a starting estimate, not a guarantee. Every dog’s metabolism differs, which is why the weigh-ins in Step 5 matter. Some vets begin at plain RER (target weight) and tighten to 0.8× only if the scale stalls.
A worked example: dog weight loss calories for a 12 kg dog
Say Mochi weighs 12 kg but her healthy target is 10 kg. We calculate everything at the 10 kg target.
- RER (exponential): 70 × 100.75 = 70 × 5.62 ≈ 394 kcal/day.
- RER (linear check): (30 × 10) + 70 = 370 kcal/day — reassuringly close.
- Weight-loss allowance: 0.8 × 394 ≈ 315 kcal/day (about 296 kcal using the linear figure).
Notice the gap: if you had fed for Mochi’s current 12 kg body, RER alone would be about 451 kcal, and true maintenance higher still. Anchoring to the 10 kg target and applying the 0.8 factor gives roughly 300–315 kcal/day — a meaningful, deliberate deficit rather than guesswork.
To turn that figure into a bowl, divide it by the food’s calorie density. If a diet provides about 100 kcal per 100 g, Mochi’s 315 kcal works out to roughly 315 g of food a day, usually split across two meals. Always feed by calories and grams, not by a scoop or a “handful”, which are far too easy to overfill.
Step 4: Keep treats to 10% of calories
Treats are the quiet saboteur of every weight-loss plan. The standard rule is that treats and chews should make up no more than 10% of daily calories, with the other 90% coming from a balanced diet.
For Mochi’s 315 kcal budget, that is roughly 31 kcal of treats a day — a couple of small training pieces, or a few slivers of carrot or cucumber, which are almost free. Whatever you give as treats must be subtracted from the meal, not added on top.
Step 5: Weigh in and reassess every 2–4 weeks
Safe canine weight loss is slow. Aim for about 1% of body weight per week (some vets accept 1–2%). For a 12 kg dog that is roughly 120 g a week, so trimming 2 kg to reach target realistically takes three to four months.
- Weigh your dog on the same scale every 2–4 weeks and record it.
- If loss is faster than ~2% a week, add calories back — rapid loss risks muscle and can signal illness.
- If the scale stalls for 2–3 weeks, cut the daily allowance by about 10% and recheck.
- As the dog loses weight, recalculate RER at each new interim target so the plan stays honest.
Getting to a lean body condition is worth the patience: in a landmark 14-year study, dogs kept lean lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their overweight littermates.
Why lower-calorie-density food beats a smaller scoop
Here is where the numbers meet the bowl. Once you know the calorie budget, you can hit it two ways: feed a tiny portion of ordinary food, or feed a normal-looking portion of a food with fewer calories per gram. The second keeps the dog full and protects nutrition.
